Archimedes's Screw

The best thing that can be said about this question is that anyone with any experience of quizzes would probably be able to work out what answer was required.

For one thing, people would have been using buckets to lift water from wells long before the Archimedes screw was invented. For another, there is no contemporaneous evidence that Archimedes played any part in its development. According to Wikipedia, the attribution of the screw pump to Archimedes "may reflect only that the apparatus was unknown to the Greeks before Hellenistic times and was introduced in Archimedes's lifetime by unknown engineers."
